The Commission has launched a public consultation on an “EU Flight Emissions Label” (FEL) (deadline for comments: 22 October 2024). The introduction of the FEL is intended to strengthen transparency and provide consumers with trustworthy information about flights. As part of this label, airlines can also show their investments in clean fuels and efficient operations.
This label is intended to cut through the jungle of different calculation methods and establish a uniform/harmonized calculation. Factors such as aircraft type, average passenger numbers and freight volume on board, as well as aviation fuel will be considered.
Initially, the use of the FEL will be voluntary. It is to start as early as the beginning of 2025 for airlines operating within the EU or departing from the EU. The Commission also wants to set up a website where it will be possible to compare different companies. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is to become the audit authority for the information provided by the airlines.
