Key employment issues to be aware of internationally

In this edition of On your radar we see how shifts in the economy, society and technology play out in the workplace. Belgium and Singapore outline different measures to protect platform workers. The use of AI within the workplace is addressed by Portugal, the Netherlands and South Africa.

And while technology and social media can help to connect us, there is also scope for misuse. A proposal for “blind lawsuits” to help tackle anonymous online hate speech is considered in the Polish entry, designed to make it easier for victims, including employers, to take legal action against anonymous offenders.

Germany highlights a challenging situation around a case involving opportunistic discrimination claims, concluding that Courts are likely to “continue to refine the criteria for distinguishing between valid and exploitative claims, balancing the need to deter bad faith lawsuits with the protection of employees’ rights.” A sentiment which no doubt will resonate in other jurisdictions.

And finally, the Swedish team discuss a recent change in the country’s progressive approach to family leave, showing the diversity of legal issues international employers are faced with, and hopefully continuing to ensure this publication remains an essential resource for keeping up with the evolving international landscape.
